Hello, neighbor — fair season is here!

Summer's easing into fall, and the county is throwing itself a proper send-off: the Evergreen State Fair fires up in Monroe, a beloved Edmonds movie house gets a new lease on life, and the farmers markets are hitting their last golden weekends. Grab a coffee and see what's on for the week ahead.

The Evergreen State Fair — Thu, Aug 27–Tue, Sept 1 & Thu, Sept 3–Mon, Sept 7, 10:30 a.m.–10 p.m. (7 p.m. on Labor Day), Evergreen State Fairgrounds, Monroe. This year's theme, "Barn in the USA! Celebrating America's 250," brings agricultural exhibits, carnival rides, a free community concert on Sept. 4, and a sensory-friendly "Morning of Dreams" event on Sept. 1 for kids and adults with disabilities.

A new chapter for the Edmonds Theater — screenings Fri, Aug 28–Thu, Sept 3, celebration night Mon, Aug 31, Edmonds Theater, downtown Edmonds. Travel guide Rick Steves just bought the 100-year-old single-screen theater to save it from closing, and the "Last Picture Shows" screening series is marking the occasion — a genuinely sweet bit of local news.

SchackToberfest opens — Thu, Sept 3–Sun, Sept 27, Schack Art Center, 2921 Hoyt Ave, Everett. The Schack's autumn tradition returns with a glass pumpkin patch of 1,000 handblown pumpkins, more than 100 works by local artists, and a silent auction.

Jetty Island Days, final week — through Sun, Sept 6, Wed–Sun, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Jetty Island Ferry Dock, Port of Everett. Everett Parks' free passenger ferry to the 2-mile sandy island beach wraps its season this weekend — last call for one of the county's best free summer outings.

Movies Under the Moon: season finale — Fri, Aug 28, dusk (around 8 p.m.)–11 p.m., Lake Tye Park, Monroe. Free outdoor family movie night closes out the summer with "How to Train Your Dragon" under the stars.

New Cathcart Park & Ride opens — Sat, Aug 29, South Snohomish County (Hwy 9 & Cathcart Way). Community Transit debuts a new park-and-ride serving Routes 166, 109, and 901, alongside expanded weekend frequency on five routes — welcome news for Highway 9 corridor commuters.
